The ecosystem of mobile telephony is complex and worldwide — consisting of application developers, chip makers, phone manufacturers, carriers, and content producers, among others. As fierce competition drives down prices, companies look for solutions that can help them simultaneously achieve two goals in apparent opposition to each other: 1) massive economies of scale; and 2) high degrees of differentiation to satisfy highly-targeted regional and demographic segments.
